FIVE-TIME UAAP champion Ateneo eked out a close 56-54 win over University of San Jose Recoletos in a shaky start to its campaign in men’s basketball on Monday in the 2012 University Games at the University of St. La Salle gym in Bacolod City.
Ateneo team manager Paolo Trillo admitted the Blue Eagles, coached by Gabby Severino, were clearly off-form and just fortunate enough to escape against a fighting Jaguars side, a consistent Final Four team in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi).
Halftime ended at 26-all.
“They played us tough and we didn’t have much time to practice because the UAAP just finished. But it’s only our first game,” stressed Trillo.
Gwyne Capacio had 12 points, while Kiefer Ravena and Nico Elorde had 11 each for the Eagles.
Over at West Negros University gym, UAAP men’s basketball runner-up University of Santo Tomas dominated John B. Lacson Maritime University, 97-70.
Tata Bautista, Aljon Mariano, and Kevin Ferrer carried the load for the Tigers in the lopsided win.

In the women’s side, Adamson routed Ateneo de Davao, 106-17, while Lyceum beat UST, 72-69.
In football, UAAP men’s champion University of the Philippines blanked Central Philippines University, 1-0.
