VIGAN, Ilocos Sur — Ann Katherine Quitoy of Western Visayas became the first record-breaker in the 2018 Palarong Pambansa here.
The 17-year-old from Romanito P. Maravilla National High School in Bacolod City threw the javelin to a distance of 45 meters at the University of Northern Philippines grounds, breaking the previous secondary girls' mark of 42.85 meters set by Sylvian Faith Abunda of Northern Mindanao last year.
Quitoy won the silver last year in Antique.
In the secondary boys, Christian Ampong gave National Capital Region its first gold medal in this year’s Palaro by winning the javelin throw, registering 58.51 meters to top the event.
Ampong dominated the field with John Paul Sarmineto of Mimaropa finishing second with a throw of 53.87 meters.
Meanwhile in secondary boys basketball, Batang Gilas guard Terrence Fortea and Carl Tamayo led NCR in beating Eastern Visayas, 86-51.
Mimaropa defeated Bicol Region, 85-76, while Central Luzon beat Sockargen, 99-96. Cagayan Valley won over Western Visayas, 68-63.
