CARLOS Yulo is receiving an additional P20 million from the Office of the President after winning two gold medals in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. matched the incentives provided by Republic Act 10699 or the National Athletes, Coaches, and Trainers Benefits and Incentives Act.

Yulo already has P20 million from the government through the Philippine Sports Commission since an Olympic gold medal is worth P10 million under the law.

Yulo captured two gold medals in the Paris Olympics after ruling the floor exercise and vault in the men’s artistic gymnastics.

The Chief Executive also conferred Yulo with the Presidential Medal of Merit which is given to an individual “for gaining prestige for the country in an international event in the fields of literature, the sciences, the arts, entertainment, and other civilian fields of endeavor including sports that foster national pride and artistic excellence.”

Marcos Jr. also matched the incentives provided to bronze medalists Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas by receiving an additional P2 million.

Meanwhile, non-medalists, though not covered by the law, were also given incentives worth P1 million. The PSC is also set to hand out a similar amount.

“Kahit sinong atleta dito sa Pilipinas o kahit saan man, makapag-qualify lang sa Olympics, mabigat ‘yun. That is an extremely difficult achievement to have managed,” said Marcos Jr. in his speech at Malacanang Palace as he personally welcomed the athletes back from Paris.

“Lahat ng mga atleta natin, bigyan natin basta nag-Olympics, bigyan natin tig-iisang milyon. I-mamatch pa ng Office of the President ‘yung ibibigay mo,” said Marcos Jr.

Marcos Jr. personally handed out the incentives during a ceremony at the Malacañang Palace shortly after the delegation touched down at the Villamor Air Base from their chartered flight from Dubai.

Each athlete were also given presidential citations as Marcos Jr. recognized how difficult it is to qualify in the Olympics.
