KEY positions were again filled on Tuesday during the first Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) general assembly under new president Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino.
Tolentino announced before the general assembly at the Diamond Hotel that he was appointing Philippine Football Federation president Mariano ‘Nonong’ Araneta as chef de mission of the Philippines for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The football chief will oversee the country’s preparation and participation in the world’s biggest quadrennial multisport event.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director and former PBA commissioner Renauld ‘Sonny’ Barrios was also appointed by Tolentino as the second deputy secretary general in charge of administrative matters.
The general assembly, meanwhile, approved the appointment of Edwin Gastanes as secretary general of the POC.
The appointments of Richard Gomez (deputy secretary general for NSA affairs), Ricky Vargas (constitutional amendments committee chairman), Lucas Managuelod (muay), Chiqui Roa-Puno (spokesperson), Ed Picson (communications director), Alberto Agra (general counsel), and Cynthia Carrion (women in sports chairperson) were likewise approved by the general assembly.
