MARIA SHARAPOVA set up a semifinal clash with Maria Kirilenko and world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka forged a last four matchup with Serena Williams in the in the London Olympics tennis tournament.
Four-time Grand Slam champion and Olympic third seed Maria Sharapova defeated Belgium’s Kim Clijsters, 6-2, 7-5, while fellow Russian Kirilenko ousted last year’s Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (3), 6-3.
Azarenka scored a 6-4, 7-5 quarterfinal win over Germany’s Angelique Kerber, while Williams clobbered fellow former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki 6-0, 6-3.
The men’s semifinals pit world No. 1 Roger Federer against Argentina’s Juan Martin de Potro, while home bet Andy Murray arranged a duel with former top player Novak Djokovic of Serbia.
Swiss top seed Federer downed John Isner of the US 6-4, 7-6 to boost bid to add the Olympic singles gold to his Grand Slam trophy collection.
Standing in his way in the last four is former US Open champion Del Potro, who defeated Japan's Kei Nishikori 6-4, 7-6.
Murray again stoked British hopes of a home winner at Wimbledon, although this time not in a Grand Slam tournament, when the Scot whipped Spain’s Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
The 25-year-old Murray, runner-up to Federer in the Wimbledon Championships just a few weeks ago, next takes on Djokovic.
Djokovic also made it to the last four at the All England Club last month, and now returns to the same stage at the same venue after a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
