Carlos Yulo incentives surpass P100M after P3M reward from Senate

THE Senate of the Philippines awarded P3 million in cash incentives as well as the Medal of Excellence to Carlos Yulo for winning two gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

A ceremonial turnover of two big checks worth P1.5 million was held during Monday’s plenary session to honor the Philippine team that posted its best Olympic finish ever behind Yulo's gold medals in the floor exercise and vault in men’s artistic gymnastics.

Senate President Francis Escudero personally awarded the Medal of Excellence which was established in 2021 and first given to the country’s first Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz.

Meanwhile, Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas were also awarded P1 million each as well as medals of excellence for winning bronze medalsin the boxing competitions of their respective weight categories in Paris.

Four resolutions were also adopted by the Senate during the plenary session to congratulate Yulo, Villegas, Petecio, the entire Philippine team, the Philippine Olympic Committee, and Philippine Sports Commission for the successful campaign.

Yulo’s incentives continues to grow on top of the P20 million provided for by Republic Act 10699 or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act and has already breached the P100-million mark.

Earlier in the day, Yulo received P2 million from the City of Manila where the Filipino star gymnast is born. Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna also declared August 4, the day where Yulo won his first Olympic gold, as ‘Araw ni Carlos Yulo.’

    President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. also matched the P20 million indicated in the law during a ceremony shortly following their arrival in the country last week.

    Eumir Marcial, Elreen Ando, John Ceniza, Vanessa Sarno, Aleah Finnegan, Emma Malabuyo, Lauren Hoffman, John Cabang, Kiyomi Watanabe, Joanie Delgaco, and Jarod Hatch were also present at the Senate together with Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino and Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richard Bachmann.
