SAM Catantan bucked pain in her left knee to advance to a table of 32 after defeating Mariana Pistoia of Brazil, 15-13, in the opening round of the 2024 Paris Olympics women’s individual foil at the Grand Palais.

Catantan, the lowest-ranked fencer in the competition at world No. 266, came from 7-4 down to win the match despite hurting her left knee at the 24-second mark of the first period.
Catantan, however, faces a table of 32 clash with world No. 2 and top-seed Arianna Errigo.
Play had to be stopped a as medical team attended to Catantan and looked into the same knee that sustained a torn ACL during the Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.
When the match resumed, Catantan scored two quick points to end the three-minute first period only down by one, setting up the close finish.
The game was tied at 13-13 when Catantan scored the final two points to capture the win over her 65th-ranked opponent.
