PHILIPPINE Sports Commission chairman Richard Bachmann assured gymnastics will receive more funding from the government after Carlos Yulo’s two-gold medal haul in the Paris Olympics.
Bachmann said the PSC will continue support Yulo in his quest to sustain and even exceed his performance after taking gold medals in the floor exercise and vault in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Yulo is eyeing to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics with a goal of a podium finish in the men’s all-around, an event where he placed 12th during the final.
“’Yung mga message sa amin is more funding. How we do funding for the PSC is based on performance. Clearly, gymnastics performed well this year,” said Bachmann during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum. “So they will actually get more funding.”
But Bachmann said they will strike a balance with other sports who also needs financial support from the government in their programs.
“Pero hindi naman puwede lahat sa gymnastics. We do have 80 sports,” said Bachmann.
“With the two golds from Carlos Yulo in the men’s artistic gymnastics and two bronzes from Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio, this is the best medal haul of the country ever,” he continued.
“I do thank our athletes for their performance and we will make sure that we will pay it back by giving them more funding for their sports and for their facilities."
Bachmann’s statements came before a Supreme Court ruling where the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation was ordered to remit the full amount of five percent of its gross income from 1993 to the present.
The PSC stands to receive billions from funds that Pagcor only remitted 2.1375 percent of its gross income due to its differing interpretation of the Republic Act 6847 or the PSC Law.
Bachmann lauded the performance of Team Philippines in the Olympics where the PSC released P158 million for expenses such as preparation, training, and actual participation specifically related to the Paris campaign dating back to 2023.
Outside of the expenses specifically allotted to the Olympics, Bachmann said the PSC also has a P31 million budget to the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines in 2024.
But Bachmann said the PSC is still finding ways of improvement especially in the grassroots and coaching aspect in order to maintain the performance after the Paris Olympic Games.
Bachmann also thanked the Philippine Olympic Committee and the private sector for collaborating to make the Paris campaign a success.
Bachmann now looks forward for the campaign of the Philippines in the Paralympic Games where the PSC gave P19 million for the preparation, training, and participation.
