Double celebration for birthday-boy Phelps

Birthday boy finds reason to celebrate as he trumps Lochte yet again
Jul 1, 2012

BIRTHDAY boy Michael Phelps again trumped Ryan Lochte, leading in each turn en route to victory in the 200-meter individual medley on Saturday in the US Olympic trials.

Phelps, who turned 27, clocked one minute and 54.84 seconds, finishing nine-tenth of a second clear of his closest challenger.

The race was held just a half hour after Lochte won the 200m backstroke in 1:54.54, with Tyler Clary second in 1:54.88.

Lochte also came up short against Phelps in the 200m freestyle but he has set up another face-off on Sunday in the 100m butterfly.

Jessica Hardy topped the 100m freestyle in 53.96 with Missy Franklin, 17, finishing second in 54.15.

Rebecca Soni was slow off the blocks but did not really have any problem winning the 200m breaststroke, clocking the fastest time in the world this year of 2: 21.13.
