Seven-gold target as Phelps drops one event

    Jul 3, 2012

MICHAEL PHELPS has scratched the 200-meter freestyle from his Olympic program, leaving him with seven events to race at the London Games.

Phelps qualified for five individual events and looked a cinch to be included in three US relay teams, but he said on Tuesday (Manila time) said he will “relax a little bit” and not chase the same number of gold medals he won in Beijing.

Coach Bob Bowman said focus will be on the 200- and 400-meter individual medleys and the 100m and 200m butterfly, apparently because of some scheduling issues such as the relay final, which will be held on the same day as the preliminaries and semifinals of the 200 freestyle.

Phelps’ decision paves the way for relay swimmer Ricky Berens, who will be seeing action in an individual event in the Olympics for the first time.
