RIO DE JANEIRO — The main bulk of the Philippine team for the 2016 Rio Olympics has arrived here on Sunday (Monday, Manila time).
Flagbearer and table tennis star Ian Lariba led the delegation that touched down this Brazil city following a long flight that had a stopover in Dubai.
Also with the delegation are weightlifters Hidilyn Diaz and Nestor Colonia, taekwondo jin Kirstie Elaine Alora, swimmer Jessie Khing Lacuna, and long jumper Marestella Torres-Sunang. They are in Rio with more than a week before the Olympics begin to get acclimatized with the conditions of the city.
Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose 'Peping' Cojuangco and chief of mission Joey Romasanta were also on the flight.
Six more athletes—boxers Rogen Ladon and Charly Suarez, 400m hurlder Eric Cray, marathoner Mary Joy Tabal, swimmer Jasmine Alkhaldi and golfer Miguel Tabuena—will join the rest of the team once their respective training camps are done.
