THE Philippines concluded its campaign in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Saturday with one gold medal, two silvers, and a bronze.
Carlo Paalam claimed a silver medal in the men’s flyweight division in boxing, capping the successful stint of the Philippines in the Tokyo Olympics.
The Philippines is 47th in the medal tally at posting time, but could still change heading into the closing ceremony on Sunday.
Hidilyn Diaz on JUly 26 ended the long wait of the Philippines, winning a gold medal in the women’s 55-kilogram division in weightlifting that has been elusive for the country since it first participated in the 1924 Olympics.
The Philippines also got a silver from Nesthy Petecio, who placed second in the women’s featherweight boxing on Aug. 3.
Boxing was also responsible for the Philippines’ lone bronze of this year’s Olympics when Eumir Marcial bagged that medal in the men’s middleweight class.
It is the first time the Philippines won multiple medals since winning three bronzes in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Hopes are also high even for other athletes who fell short of medals, with several competing in their first Olympics.
Despite a disappointing performance in the all-around qualification and failing to make it to the final of floor, his pet event, gymnast Caloy Yulo placed fourth in the vault, barely missing a podium finish.
Margielyn Didal finished seventh in the women’s street in skateboarding.
EJ Obiena placed 11th in pole vault, the first time in a long while that a Filipino from athletics entered the final.
US Women’s Open champion Yuka Saso placed ninth in women’s golf.
