Patricia Hizon, TV5 broadcasters tapped to be part of 'Asianized' coverage of Rio Olympics

Jul 27, 2016

THREE Filipino broadcasters are set to join the Philippine team in Rio as part of the commentary panel for Asian viewers in the Olympics.

Sports5’s Patricia Bermudez-Hizon, Magoo Marjon, and Carlo Pamintuan have been selected to do commentary for 22 countries where the Olympics will be carried by their respective local networks.

Bermudez-Hizon, the head of Sports5, said the three of them went through interviews before they were selected for the coverage.

“We were interviewed and we were first recommended by TV5. They asked other Asian countries to participate in this project and we are proud because TV5 has the largest Asian delegation within the broadcast team,” said Bermudez-Hizon.

Bermudez-Hizon said that their commentary is separate from the usual Olympic commentary that is beamed throughout the world, with this one providing focus specifically for Asian viewers.

“It’s an effort from the region to 'Asianize' the game, whether it’s content or just making sure that we pay attention and focus also on the Asian participation in the Olympics,” said Bermudez-Hizon.

Bermudez-Hizon said she will provide commentary to taekwondo, volleyball, basketball, and possibly the opening ceremony, while Marjon will have assignments in basketball and athletics. Pamintuan will do boxing and judo.

“But we are on standby,” Bermudez-Hizon said. “Depending on the schedule, they can all of a sudden throw an assignment, maybe a sport that you are not familiar with. That’s the nature of the job. You have to adopt and think fast.”
