KIRSTIE Elaine Alora faces a tough early task, drawn to fight the world No. 1 in the opening round, but the Filipina is still confident of her medal chances in the Rio Olympics.
Alora takes on Mexico’s Maria Espinoza, Olympic champion in 2008 and bronze medalist in 2012, on August 20 in her opening match in the +67kg weight class.
“I will fight Mexico (Espinoza), the top one in my category. I think I have good chance in winning,” Alora said in an interview with SPIN.ph before she left for Rio De Janeiro.
Alora, ranked 24th in her division, noted that her opponents now are about the same height. Alora stands at 5-foot-8, the same as Espinoza.
“Dati ang problema namin is the height of my opponents, kadalasan six foot plus sila. But then dun sa draw lots namin ayun yung nakikita naming almost kasing height ko lang so I think pantay-pantay naman kaming lahat doon,”
Alora qualified for Rio in April after bagging silver in the Olympic qualifiers in Manila.
