KAYLA Sanchez wrapped up her campaign in the Paris Olympics with a 15th-place finish in the women’s 100m freestyle at the Paris La Defense Arena.
Sanchez placed seventh in the Semifinals 2 with a time of 54.21, more than a second behind Gretchen Walsh of the United States, who took the eighth and last seat in the finals.
Sanchez’s clocking in the semifinal was slower than the 53.67 seconds she registered in the heats that enabled her to finish at No. 10 among 29 swimmers in the preliminaries.
Nevertheless, it was a good showing for Sanchez, who shattered her own Philippine record of 54.25 she set during the Mel Zajac Jr. International Meet in Vancouver, Canada last June 23 during the heats.
The Philippines sent a swimmer in the semifinals in Paris after the now-retired Remedy Rule also finished 15th in the women’s 200m butterfly in the Tokyo Olympics.
Siobhan Bernadette Haughey of Hong Kong topped the semifinals with a time of 52.64 seconds followed by the Australian pair of Shayna Jack (52.72) and Mollie O’Callaghan (52.75).
Other finalists are Yang Junxuan of China (52.81), Marrit Steenbergen of Netherlands (52.86), Sarah Sjoestroem of Sweden (52.87), Torrie Huske of United States (52.99), and Walsh (53.18).
Sanchez previously captured the silver in the 4x100m freestyle and bronze in the 4x100m medley for Canada in the Tokyo Olympics before switching nationalities to the Philippines in 2022.
Jarod Hatch will be competing in the men's 100m butterfly on August 2.
