PHILIPPINE sports officials eagerly await an International Olympic Committee vote on the inclusion of several new events for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
The IOC expressed support as the hosts proposed the addition of five new sports, and the vote will be made before the Rio Games in August on whether to include baseball and softball, karate, skateboarding, sports climbing, and surfing for the 2020 calendar.
Philippine Karatedo Federation secretary general Raymund Lee Reyes is elated with the move of the IOC, hopeful that karate will be a source of medals in future editions of the Olympics.
“Very proud kami. Ang maganda nito at least ‘yung mga youth na nanalo sa events, sila rin ‘yung aabot sa 2020. Napaka-active ng sport natin," said Reyes.
Karate, skateboard, sports climbing, and surfing have never been played in the Olympics. Baseball and softball could return to the Olympic program after being scrapped following the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
