    Olympics-bound Ian Lariba ramps up preparation with month-long Korea training

    IAN Lariba has been staying in Korea for over a week and will spend almost a month there to train and compete in a world tournament as part of her preparation for the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics.

    Table Tennis Association of the Philippines president Ting Ledesma said Lariba has been in Korea since June 6 as she trains in several clubs in the different provinces in the country. She will later train in Samsung, which has a program where former world and Olympic champions are coaching several table tennis players.

    “Nasa Korea na siya ngayon, umiikot sa mga provincial and high school table tennis clubs ng mga top players. Then, babiyahe siya sa Samsung, doon siya mag-tetraining under several coaches, mga top players ng world dati na mga coaches na,” said Ledesma.

    Ledesma also said Lariba is set to compete in the ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) World Tour Korea Open from June 22 to 26, where she will test her skills against some of the top players in the world.

    “After ng tournament, training uli and then she will go back to Manila on July 4,” said Ledesma, who bared that Lariba is also set to compete for Philippines-UAAP in the Asian University Games.

    Lariba, one of the four Athletes of the Year awardees of the UAAP in Season 79, qualified for the Rio Games after getting the 11th and final spot for Asia in an Olympic qualifier in Hong Kong, becoming the first Filipino table tennis player to make it to the Olympics.
