HOPES are high for Joanie Delgaco to reach the quarterfinals of the rowing regatta of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Delgaco was relegated to the repechage after placing fourth in her heat during the women’s single sculls on Saturday. The Filipina sculler was actually on pace to claim one of the three seats in the quarterfinals outright, only for her foe to from Slovenia to catch up and take the spot.
The good news is that Delgaco still has a chance to make it to the quarterfinals and keep her hopes alive for a medal through the repechage by finishing in the top two of her heat.
Philippine Rowing Association president Patrick Gregorio said Delgaco has a fighting chance to progress in the quarterfinals through the repechage based on the times of the other rowers in the repechage including Vietnam’s Pham Thi Hue, the 2021 Southeast Asian Games title that she won over the Filipina sculler.
Delgaco and Pham will be on the same heat along with rowers from Togo, Cuba, and Nicaragua.
“Basing off from the official times of her competitors, Joanie has good odds to secure a Top 2 finish. Closest to her performance is Vietnam's Pham, also placing fourth in her heat with a time of 8:03.84 (or) 7.5 seconds behind Joanie's time,” said Gregorio.
Gregorio said Delgaco remains focus on the goal even after missing the outright quarterfinal slot.
“We have confidence in Joanie's ability to secure this positioning, but as always, implore her to stay focused, calm, and give her very best in any race no matter the competitor,” said Gregorio.
Delgaco is scheduled for action on Sunday, 9 a.m. Paris time (Sunday, 3 p.m. Manila time).
