RIO DE JANEIRO—Hidilyn Diaz kept focus on her own training for the Rio Olympics despite admitting her chances of winning a medal improved with the suspension of a weightlifter from Kazakhstan for doping.
Four weightlifters from Kazakhstan were recently suspended by the International Weightlifting Federation after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs during the 2012 London Olympics.
One of the suspended competitors is Zulfiya Chinshanlo, who is entered in the 53kg division where Diaz will be seeing action.
Diaz, who won a bronze medal in the 2015 World Championship in Houston, said her chances of taking home a medal in the Olympics improved with Chinshanlo out. But she insisted the Olympics is different from the world championships, which is why she's training hard and not going too overconfident heading into the competition.
“Siyempre sa part ko, nawala ‘yung isang kalaban ko. Medyo may chance manalo kasi standing ko sa world championship, third kasi wala siya,” said Diaz.
“Hindi mo masabi kasi Olympics ‘to, iba ‘yung pressure,” she added.
Diaz trained on Friday (Saturday Manila time) along with fellow weightlifter Nestor Colonia and head coach Alfonsito Aldanete where she was able to lift 85 kg in the snatch.
