FOR winning the country’s first Olympic medal in the last 20 years, Hidilyn Diaz expectedly became a trending topic on Twitter early Monday morning.
The name of the Filipina lifter quickly trended on social media just minutes after she won the silver medal in the women’s 53 kg. class of the weightlifting competitions of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro.
The medal was the first for this country of 100 million people in the quadrennial meet since boxer Mansueto ‘Onyok’ Velasco won the silver in the light-flyweight class during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
Diaz trended over other Philippine topics such as #ALDUBsaAfrica and #WalangPasok.
The 25-year-old Diaz also earned the distinction of becoming the first and only Filipina to win an Olympic medal and the first athlete from weightlifting.
She is also only the third Filipino athlete to bring home an Olympic silver medal after Velasco and the late Anthony Villanueva, also a boxer.
