TWO down and two remains for the Philippine boxing team.
Hergie Bacyadan punched a ticket to the round of 16 of the 2nd World Qualification Tournament at the Indoor Arena Huamark in Bangkok, Thailand with a 5-0 win over Dunia Martinez of Spain.
Bacyadan is the lone female entry of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) as part of the compact four-man national team competing in the women’s 75 kg class.
Her victory late Monday night somehow made up for the sorry loss of pro fighter Criztian Pitt Laurente in the men’s 63.5 kg.
Laurente, 24, lost via a 5-0 shutout to Bazarbay Uulu Mukhammedsabyr of Kazakhstan to join Olympian Rogen Ladon in the sidelines.
Ladon also bowed out of contention following a 4-1 split decision opposite Rafael Lozano Serrano of Spain in the 51 kg division over the weekend.
Ladon, brother of former national boxer Jojen Ladon, was seeking a return to the Olympiad after previously representing the country in the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Games.
Olympic silver medalist Carlo Paalam is the other boxer to advance in the next round after beating Alexeir Lagkazasvili of Greece in the men’s 57 kg.
The Tokyo Games silver medalist will face Shukur Ovezov of Turkmenistan in the Round of 32 late Tuesday night.
Ovezov is one familiar foe for Paalam, who lost to the Turkmenistan fighter via Referee Stopped Contest during the 1st World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Italy.
Paalam walked away during the second round as he fought with a shoulder injury which he suffered the previous fight against Andrey Bonilla of Mexico.
