MARIA Leonor Estampador of the Philippines has been honored by the International Olympic Committee in the IOC Women and Sport Awards recognizing the contributions of individuals and organizations to the development, encouragement and reinforcement of women’s participation in sport.
Estampador was given the continental award for Asia on Monday in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Felicite Rwemarika of Rwanda was given the award for Africa, Carole Oglesby of the US for the Americas, Majken Gilmartin of Denmark for Europe and Moya Dodd of Australia for Oceania.
Estampador was the Philippines' first female national fencing coach, and now works as administrative manager for the Asian Fencing Confederation.
Olympic.org said Estampador has championed providing broader opportunities for women in both administrative and technical responsibilities within sport.
