ELREEN Ann Ando put on a strong showing in the Paris Olympics with a sixth-place finish in the women’s 59kg division of the weightlifting competitions at the South Paris Arena.
Ando, who edged Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz during the qualification round of the weight category, registered a total of 230 kilograms after notching a personal best of 130 on the clean and jerk in her second Olympic Games.
Anyelin Venegas Valeria of Colombia and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal of Nigeria also had an identical 230-kilogram total as Ando but were the fourth and fifth finishers on record after the tiebreaker.
They were also five kilograms short of bronze medalist Kuo Hsing-Chun of Chinese Taipei after a total of 235.
Luo Shifang of China took the gold with a 107 in the snatch and 134 in the clean and jerk for a 241 total, all of which were new Olympic records.
Maude Charron of Canada got the silver with a total of 236.
Ando began the competition by lifting 100 kilograms on her second attempt in the snatch, but was unsuccessful at her bid for a personal best of 102 in the third attempt.
Ando’s performance came a day after John Ceniza registered a DNF in the men’s 61kg.
