CHINA reasserted its supremacy in men’s team gymnastics, while Japan claimed silver after winning an appeal that pushed Great Britain down to third place and Ukraine out of the podium.
The Beijing Games champion China scored 275.997, while Japan was given 271.952 by the judges, but not after an appeal that apparently raised its score.
An untidy dismount on the pommel horse by world champion Kohei Uchimura was expected to put the Japanese team below the standings, but the team made an appeal and after around 15 minutes, officials hiked Japan’s score which put the team in second place, to the chagrin of the home crowd and Ukrainian officials who had thought they won bronze.
Great Britain was a close 271.711, settling for bronze for its first medal in the event in 100 years, while Ukraine was given a 271.526 total for fourth place.
That capped the day’s drama after Team USA, which topped the qualifying round, struggled in the final and wound up fifth with 269.952 points.
