CHARLY Suarez outpointed his young Taiwanese foe on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals of the Asian-Oceanian Olympic qualifying tournament on Sunday in Qian'An City in Hebei, China.
Veteran lightweight Suarez outpointed Chinese-Taipei's national champion Lai Chu-En, with the three judges all scoring the bout, 30-26.
The 27-year-old Davaoeno set up a showdown in the round of eight with India's Dheeeraj.
Nesthy Petecio, a silver medalist at the Aiba World Women's Championships in Korea two years ago, dominated Micronesia’s Jennifer Chieng, 40-36, 40-36, 40-35.
Suarez who fights in Aiba’s World Series of Boxing, Pro Boxing and Open Boxing, rocked his opponent from the opening bell and the Taiwanese lad was given a standing 8-count about a minute into the fight.
The 20-year-old Lai was again given the 8-count as he absorbed a hard right uppercut to the breadbasket towards the end of the round.
"Medyo bata pa at kulang sa experience. Pero hindi ako nagpabaya kasi mabilis at may power din," said Suarez.
Light flyweight Rogen Ladon was to debut against Japan's Tosho Kashiwasaki on Monday, while welterweight Eumir Felix Marcial was to take on Kori Istafanos of Australia.
"The tournament is just starting. You need either four or five wins here to qualify for the Olympics. But we're off to a good start," said delegation head and ABAP executive director Ed Picson.
Bantamweight Mario Fernandez, who drew a bye in the first round, will face Yakub Meredov of Turkmenistan, while Roldan Boncales battles Oizhas Sattibayev of Kazkhstan.
