Abap allays concerns over ‘hometown decision’ as Petecio goes for gold

Petecio goes for gold against Japanese fighter
    Aug 3, 2021

ASSOCIATION of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (Abap) secretary general Ed Picson thinks that the possibility of a ‘hometown decision’ is remote especially with the way the Olympic boxing competition is being conducted.

Nesthy Petecio goes for the gold medal on Tuesday when she clashes with Sena Irie of Japan in the women’s featherweight final.

“Marami ring nagtatanong sa akin about hometown decisions. Sa nakikita ko naman, sa takbo ng tournament, generally speaking, wala gaanong kwestionable na mga decision,” said Picson during the SPIN POV episode on Monday night.

The International Olympic Committee runs the boxing competition through the IOC Boxing Task Force after suspending the recognition of Aiba, the international federation of the sport.

The only controversy in Olympic boxing that grabbed the headlines was during the super heavyweight when Mourad Aliev of France refused to leave the ring after he was disqualified for a head butt in the fight against British boxer Frazer Clarke.

Picson said the controversy was due to a referee decision and not by the judges.

“Hindi mo naman sasabihin na dahil decision ng judges. It was the referee who decided na ihinto ‘yung laban because he felt that the cut was caused by an intentional headbutt. That’s the prerogative of the referee. Hindi sumang-ayon ‘yung boxer. Naglupasay doon. I think it’s on the boxer, hindi na sa opisyal,” said Picson.

Picson also noted that Petecio is used to fighting hometown boxers and that includes the 2019 Aiba Women’s World Championship where the Davaoena won the title against Liudmila Vorontsova of Russia.

“Alalahanin natin sa world championship kung saan siya ang nag-gold. That was in Russia at kalaban niya Russia. Hindi lang basta Russia. Tiga-doon mismo sa bayan o sa siyudad kung saan pinag-ganapan ng tournament.”

“Nesthy is used to that. Kayang kaya niya lalo na ngayon na walang tao pero of course, marami pa ring Hapon doon,” said Picson.

Picson, however, also warned that Irie, 20, is also capable of winning the gold medal on her own merits.

“We’ll see. Kasi the Japanese girl is, sabi ni coach Don (Abnett), is a sneaky operator. She has tricks up her sleeves that we have to be prepared. She has an excellent coaching staff. Magaling mag-scout. It should be a good fight,” Picson added.
