MANSUETO ‘Onyok’ Velasco and Hidilyn Diaz were awarded with the Sports Idol plum in the 1st Phoenix-Petroleum Siklab Youth Sports Awards on Wednesday night at the Century Park Hotel.
Velasco and Diaz were given the award by the PSC-POC Media Group in order to serve as inspiration to the 48 youth athletes who gained prominence in local and international scene.
In his brief message, Velasco, who copped the boxing silver medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, said nothing beats discipline in achieving their dreams.
“Pinakaimportante ay disiplina. ‘Yun ang number one. Kapag may disiplina, siguradong malayo ang mararating ninyo,” said Velasco.
Meanwhile, Diaz urged the athletes during the ceremony also backed by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee to aim higher.
“Don’t stop there. Dream higher. Hindi basta dream ng dream. You have to work hard for it. Always seek guidance to God. You are the future sports heroes of this country,” said Diaz.
