NATIONAL University is back on track after two consecutive losses, whipping Philippine National Police, 25-23, 25-16, 25-18, on Sunday in the Shakey’s V-League Season II Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
Myla Pablo and Jaja Santiago each had 12 kills as the Lady Bulldogs evened their win-loss record to 2-2.
It was a huge win for National U after being shut out by Army and defending champion Cagayan Valley.
“We made defensive adjustments in the second set that’s why the complexion of the game changed,” said NU coach Ariel dela Cruz.
Santiago finished with 18 hits, Pablo scored 13, while setter Ivy Perez also came through with three blocks for a five-point output for the Lady Bulldogs.
Frances Molina led the way as usual for PNP with 15 hits, but didn’t get enough support from the Lady Patrollers, who are winless in five outings and on the brink of elimination from the mid-season conference.
The win is also a big boost in morale for the Lady Bulldogs as they prepare for Tuesday’s match against PLDT, which is looking to bounce back after a straight-sets loss to the unbeaten Lady Troopers last Thursday.
Though PNP produced 32 kills against NU’s 37, the Lady Patrollers drew just 12 excellent sets from Jane Ticar, limiting the team’s scoring chances at the net.
In contrast, Perez made 25 excellent sets mostly for Santiago and Pablo.
Jane Mandapat also chipped eight markers, Jorelle Singh and Perez each had five points and skipper Desiree Dadang added four hits for NU, seeking a follow-up to its First Conference win in Season 10.
NU’s defense also held Jane Maderazo to just eight markers while Charisse Perez and Michell Datuin combined for 11 points for PNP.
The NU-PNP game will be aired on GMA News TV Channel starting at 1 p.m. on Monday, with the Ateneo-UP duel to be shown Tuesday.
