SCOTTIE Thompson has been cleared to see action as the Philippine basketball team steps up preparations for the Fiba Basketball World Cup.
The 30-year-old Thompson was present at Gilas Pilipinas training on Monday night, according to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas director of operations and team manager Butch Antonio.
Thompson, the PBA Season 47 MVP, suffered a right metacarpal fracture during Gilas Pilipinas' training camp in Europe.
He stayed in the Philippines to recover as Gilas played a pocket tournament in China.
Kai update
GILAS Pilipinas may finally get the lowdown on Kai Sotto’s health status.
"The doors are opening. Kai's doctors will speak to our doctors either tonight or tomorrow morning," a SBP source told Spin.ph on Monday.
Gilas said a requirement for Sotto to be cleared for full practice is the MRI result after he aggravated a back issue while playing for the Orlando Magic Summer League team.
SBP director of operations Butch Antonio also said an option is for Kai’s doctors to speak with Gilas’ doctor Randy Molo. “We go from there and perhaps arrive at a resolution," Antonio said.
Italy streak continues
MEANWHILE, Italy, one of the Philippines’ rivals in pool play, came up with another win in the buildup for the Fiba Basketball World Cup.
Simone Fontecchio and Gabriele Procida showed the way as Italy beat Puerto Rico, 98-65, in a tune-up game.
It was Italy’s fifth win in as many games in official tuneup matches for the world meet.
Gilas takes on the Azzurri on Aug. 29.
Erram update
POY Erram faces a lengthy layoff and could miss the entire PBA Season 48.
The TNT center recently underwent surgery on his right knee and said he could be out six to eight months.
PBA Season 48, featuring only the Commissioner’s Cup and the Philippine Cup, is expected to run from October to May.
The 34-year-old Erram on Sunday announced his retirement from Gilas.
