KIEFER Louie Alas continued his fine play as Gilas Pilipinas Youth defeated host Indonesia, 77-65, in the Southeast Asian qualifiers for the Fiba Under-16 Asian Championship on Wednesday in Surabaya.

Alas had 19 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks as the Batang Gilas comnpleted a three-game sweep of the qualifiers.

CJ Amos and Kurt Velasquez each had 14 points for the Philippines.

Batang Gilas had secured a spot in the Asian meet set Sept. 17 to 24 in Doha with an 85-49 rout of Thailand on Tuesday. They beat Malaysia, 94-52, in the opener.

GILAS Pilipinas is set for one important tuneup match at home before the start of the Fiba Basketball World Cup.

The Philippine team, which is set to play in a pocket tournament in China from August 2 to 6, will take on Mexico at home on Aug. 21.

That’s four days before the world championship gets going.

“We already have a confirmed friendly against Mexico dito sa atin Pilipinas,” said coach Chot Reyes in an interview with SEAG Network. “That should take the place of Latin American style of play na hinahanap natin to prepare us for Dominican Republic.”

Gilas is also looking to play Puerto Rico, which is also holding camp in China.

Anton Asistio shot 6 for 9, including 5 for 8 from beyond the arc, and finished with 17 points, which was matched by Andrei Caracut off the bench on 7 of 11 shooting.

The Elasto Painters notched their seventh win in nine games, getting back on track after a loss in Dumaguete to the Magnolia Hotshots.

JM Calma had 22 points for the Batang Pier, who slid to 5-5.

It was the Tropang Giga’s first win in eight games in the preseason exhibition series.

Sean Manganti scored 18 on 7 of 13 shooting for the Fuel Masters, who suffered their fourth straight loss for a 3-7 win-loss record.
