    THE Philippines got a big boost ahead of the Fiba Basketball World Cup, scoring an 85-62 victory over Ivory Coast in a closed-door tune-up game on Friday night at the Philsports Arena.

    Jordan Clarkson went 4 for 9 and finished with 13 points, which was matched by June Mar Fajardo on 4 of 5 shooting.

    AJ Edu had 12 points and seven rebounds for Gilas.

    Scottie Thompson, back with Gilas after missing Gilas’ tuneup series in China due to a hand injury, had 11 points, five assists and four rebounds.

    Gilas vs Montenegro

    MONTENEGRO’s team arrived in the Philippines on Thursday night and will play Gilas Pilipinas in a tune-up match on Sunday.

    The Angolan team, which plays in Group A with the Philippines, is set to arrive on Saturday along with Mexico and Egypt. Gilas takes on Mexico in a friendly match on Monday.

    The Dominican Republic squad led by Karl-Anthony Towns, also playing in Group A, is expected to arrive on Sunday, the same day the Greek team is scheduled to plane in.

    Team USA, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Serbia, and Gilas pool rival Italy are scheduled to arrive on Tuesday.

    Lithuania, China, South Sudan and Jordan are set to arrive on Wednesday, two days before the opener of the Fiba Basketball World Cup.

    Eumir Marcial update

    Eumir Marcial

    OLYMPIC medalist Eumir Marcial is expected to return to the Philippines soon to join the national team in the preparations for the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

    Marcial’s professional fight originally scheduled this month has been moved to September. However, the Asian Games will be held Sept. 23 to Oct. 8.

    “(MP Promotions president) Sean (Gibbons) readily agreed that Marcial focuses on Hangzhou [Asiad] and go after his Olympic dream,” said Philippine Olympic Committee president Bambol Tolentino.

    Marcial, fighting in the 80 kg class, needs at least a second-place finish in Hangzhou to earn a spot in the Paris Games.
