Another import switch for Dragons?
MYLES Powell is day-to-day and could still return to action for Bay Area as it enters the semifinals of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
The 25-year-old American guard suffered a foot injury in practice and the Dragons fielded Andrew Nicholson in the quarterfinals where they beat eighth seed Rain or Shine, 126-96, on Friday at the Philsports Arena.
If Powell returns to play for Bay Area, Nicholson will no longer be eligible to come back to the Dragons, based on the concession the PBA had with the Dragons in their stint as guest team in the Commissioner’s Cup.
Nicholson had 32 points as the Dragons advanced to a series in the last four against either San Miguel or Converge. The Beermen lead the best-of-three series 1-0.
Hotshots advance
CALVIN Abueva scored 19 as second seed Magnolia disposed of Phoenix with a 102-95 victory on Friday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Nick Rakocevic added 18 points for the Hotshots, who advanced to the round of four against Barangay Ginebra or NorthPort. The Gin Kings took the series opener.
Tyler Tio had 18 points to lead Phoenix, while Encho Serrano and Kaleb Wesson each scored 16.
Coaching switch at MVP bloc?
THE Fiba Basketball World Cup less than a year away and changes are said to be in the works to allow coach Chot Reyes to focus on the Philippine team while giving teams under the MVP group a reboot.
Spin.ph sources said Norman Black could return to TNT as head coach, with Luigi Trillo getting elevated to head coach at Meralco.
The Tropang Giga and the Bolts fell short of the Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals, along with NLEX, which also recently had a coaching change.
