BASKETBALL LEGEND Mon Fernandez on Sunday challenged Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco to a vote among national athletes on who between them should resign from their respective positions in sports.
Fernandez, a first-term commissioner in the Philippine Sports Commissiohn, said he will resign immediately if it was determined by the poll that national athletes want him out of office.
Cojuangco should do so if he loses, he added.
Fernandez’s challenge came days after Cojuangco accused the four-time PBA MVP of being a ‘game-fixer’ during his playing days in the pro league.
“’Yung sabi niya na papaano ako paniniwalaan ng mga athletes natin kung game-fixer ako, mag-hurl ako ng challenge sa kanya. Lahat ng national athletes, pagbobotohin natin, kung sino ang gusto nilang mag-resign at kung sino pipiliin nilang mag-resign,” Fernandez said.
“Mag-reresign ako right away,” Fernandez assured.
To back up his game-fixing claims, Cojuangco said he has documents from close ally Pastor Boy Saycon, who the POC president said is a close friend of Fernandez’s former coach at Toyota Dante Silverio.
The PBA legend, days later, fired back at Cojuangco by questioning expenses the POC was able to reimburse from the past administration of the PSC that he said didn’t benefit Filipino athletes.
As for the ‘game-fixer’ allegations, Fernandez said he is waiting for Cojuangco to prove his claim against him in a proper forum.
“As far as his allegations (are concerned), I will give him the chance to prove that in the proper forum. He will have to answer his allegations in a proper forum,” said Fernandez.
