DAVAO CITY — Lumads are participating in the 2017 Mindanao Children's Games and Barangay Bantol where the Manobo tribe lives in this city has entries in girls volleyball, boys 3-on-3 basketball and larong Pinoy events.

The Barangay Bantol girls volleyball team reached the playoff round before bowing out after a 21-25, 25-23, 25-15 loss to Barangay Mulig on Saturday at the Almendras Gym.

Bantol barangay captain Dionisio Sayad said they are pleased to be able to participate in bigger sporting activities such as the MCG, and the children do not mind the two-hour travel to downtown Davao.

"Masaya sila pumunta dito sa Davao kasi pa-minsan minsan lang sila pumunta dito," said Sayad, from a barangay of about 1,000 Manobo households.

Sayad said the Manobo tribe also has sports facilities but playing in the Almendras Gym is a big help as they try to encourage their tribe to get into sports.

"Mayroon din gym pero open lang. Hindi ganito. 'Yung mga bata, alanganin tumakbo dahil madulas," said Sayad.

"Nakaka-engangyo ng mga bata ito para maiwasan nila 'yung mga droga kasi masaya sila," said Sayad.
