JUDOKAS Lloyd Dennis Catipon, Bryn Quillotes, and Jenielou Mosqueda ruled their respective weight categories in the kurash event of the Philippine Pre-Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games at the Harrison Plaza.
Catipon defeated Czar Agustus Bayas in the men’s -73kg category gold medal match, while Quillotes captured the gold in the men’s -66kg division with a win over Al Rolan Llamas.
Mosqueda, meanwhile, grabbed the women’s -63kg gold after beating Lorelei Tolentino of University of Santo Tomas in the final.
Kurash is one of the oldest martial arts in the world tracing its roots in Uzbekistan.
The tournament is being used by Philippine sports officials as a tryout for the national team to the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games for sports that have yet to establish national sports associations in the Philippines.
Traditional wrestling, belt wrestling, kickboxing, and sambo are also being played in the Pre-AIMAG meet.
In kurash, Bianca Mae Estrella of University of the East defeated teammate Sharlene Mae Guyo to capture gold in the women’s -70kg division.
Mellisa Buyco of University of the Philippines copped the gold in the women’s +78kg class, while Adrian Perillo upended Khalid Macadadaya of UE to top the men’s -60kg category.
