A 17-YEAR-OLD Philippine athletics record was broken during the staging of the Philippine National Games.
Grospe leaps to 2.20 meters
National athlete Leonard Grospe took the gold in the men’s open high jump with a clearance of 2.20 meters at the Philsports track oval to shatter the old mark of 2.17 by Sean Guevara set during the 2005 National Open.
Incidentally, Grospe is currently coached by Guevara.
The 22-year-old defeated Ernie Cabanza Calipay of Mandaluyong City (2.06), and national team long jumper Janry Ubas (1.90).
Davao City’s Lyka Labrica Catubig, meanwhile, claimed her second gold by taking the 20-under 5000m run with a time of 19 minutes, 26.84 seconds.
The BS Criminology student of University of Mindanao already had the gold in the 5000m walk which she won during the first day of competitions.
Ubas wins long jump
Ubas took the long jump crown with a mark of 7.75 meters, beating fellow national team member John Mike Ayos Lera (7.36) and John Marvin Aragon Rafols of Cebu City (7.36).
