Lady Stags eye playoff for quarterfinal berth as Shakey's V-League elims come to a close

    Apr 28, 2014

SAN Sebastian tries to salvage a struggling campaign in the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 First Conference campaign as it battles Davao on the final day of the eliminations at The Arena in San Juan on Tuesday.

The Lady Stags face a must-win situation over the Agilas in the 2 p.m. encounter in their bid to forge a sudden-death match with Far Eastern University for the last quarterfinals berth in Group B.

At 1-3, San Sebastian is just a full game behind FEU (2-3) and can forge a playoff on Thursday with a victory.

But the Agilas are also eyeing a victory after seeing their immaculate record come to an end on Sunday following a loss to University of Santo Tomas that left both teams tied at 3-1 and trailing early qualifier and group leader National University by a game at 4-1.

The Lady Tigresses see action later in the day, battling winless University of Perpetual Help as they try to extend their winning streak in the 4 p.m. match.

Mela Tunay, Pam Lastimosa, Jessey de Leon, and rookie sensation EJ Laure are again expected to be the at the forefront of UST’s campaign after steering the team to three straight wins, including one over the Agilas.

A victory by both UST and Davao will forge a three-way tie on top of Group B together with the reigning champion Lady Bulldogs at 4-1. The quotient system will be applied to break the tie and determine the final placings of the three teams in the next round.

But a UST and Davao loss would leave the two teams tied for second place in their group, prompting a playoff between the two also on Thursday.

If no playoffs would be held, the quarterfinals begin as scheduled on May 1.

The quarterfinals cast in Group A has already been settled which saw Ateneo taking the No. 1 spot over Arellano and Adamson, respectively, after all three teams finished the elims with identical 4-1 slates.

St. Benilde clinched the last quarterfinals berth in the same group with a 2-3 record.
