DE LA Salle is set to win its second straight general championship in the UAAP.
The Green Archers have virtually won the overall crown for Season 76 of the league after their women’s chess team clinched a fourth straight crown on Saturday with still a round to go, according to a person with knowledge of the race for the overall title, but refused to be named pending the official announcement of the winner.
Under the UAAP scoring system, a championship is worth 15 points, second place 12, and third 10 points. The fourth to eighth placers are given eight, six, four, two, and one point respectively.
La Salle recently finished runners-up in men’s fencing, baseball, and women’s tennis during the second semester to stay on top of the general championship derby.
Women’s volleyball is the only other tournament still ongoing with La Salle very much in contention for a title.
The Taft-based school won its first-ever general championship last year after collecting 293 points, ending the long 14-year reign of University of Santo Tomas on top.
La Salle’s Season 76 campaign was highlighted by a thrilling victory in men’s basketball that saw the Archers win 10 of their last 11 games including two against UST in the finals last October.
After the first semester, La Salle showed the way in the general championship race with a total of 162 points after also winning in women’s basketball, men’s table tennis, men’s taekwondo, and women’s judo, with UST in second place with 146 points.
