BANKO-Perlas stalwart Kathy Bersola posted a career-high 24 points but insisted that eclipsing her previous record wasn’t her goal at all.
The former University of the Philippines captain, who once scored 21 points for the Lady Maroons in the UAAP, led the Spikers in a come-from-behind, 24-26, 13-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-11, win over BaliPure in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.
After trailing by two sets, Bersola knew she had to rise to the occasion but her teammates’ trust gave her the confidence she needed.
“Well, kasi sobrang binigyan nila ako ng tiwala. They were saying sa setter na, sige lang bigay mo lang nang bigay kay Kathy, pupuntos 'yan nang pupuntos,” said Bersola.
The former UAAP best blocker just did what she had to do and before she knew it, she already had 20 attacks and four blocks in a match that took almost two hours to finish.
“So ‘yung ibibigay sa akin, papaluin ko talaga or power tip or try ko talaga ang best ko (pumuntos),” she said.
“Pati sa blocking, gusto ko talagang kapain, hawakan (ang bola), ewan ko gusto ko lang manalo,” she added.
The win boosted BanKo-Perlas’ chance for the semifinals and put the Spikers at the fourth spot (3-3) behind early semifinalist Creamline (5-0), Air Force (3-1) and defending champion Pocari Sweat (3-1).
