DARWIN, Australia – Kate Diaz took a silver in weightlifting for the Philippines’ first medal in the 2019 Arafura Games at the Darwin Convention Centre.
Shi Yue-Shan of Chinese Taipei won the women’s 45 kilogram class.
The 15-year-old Diaz lifted 50 kilograms in the snatch and 65 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a total of 115 kilograms.
Shi won with 53 kilograms in the snatch and 67 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a 120 kilogram total.
On her third lift in the clean and jerk, Diaz could not complete an attempt at 70 kilograms.
Diaz, competing in her first international tournament, was in tears after the event but vowed to bounce back in future competitions.
