Jubilant Puentevella vows to turn Bacolod into country's sports capital

    May 15, 2013

NEWLY-elected Bacolod City mayor Monico Puentevella plans to make the southern city one of the major sports hubs in the country.

The former Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) chairman and current president of the Philippine Weightlifting Federation has vowed to continue embarking on various sports programs in Bacolod after beating Thaddy Sayson for the mayoralty post in the just-concluded elections.

Sports is nothing new to the `City of Smiles,' which was one of the satellite hosts during the 2005 Southeast Asian Games, staged the revival of the Philippine National Games, and hosted several of the Philippine Azkals’ matches at the Panaad Sports Complex.

But Puentevella said he wants to make Bacolod the center of sporting activities in the country.

“We are planning to make Bacolod the sports capital of the Philippines,” Puentevella said.

The former congressman said one of his plans is to continue to lure sports organizers to hold events in the city.

The former commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission also plans to make Bacolod the training ground for potential national team members, mentioning boxing and football as some of the sports that he plans to further develop.

Puentevella’s election as Bacolod City mayor came six months after his failed bid for a fresh four-year term as POC chairman, losing out to triathlon association president Tom Carrasco during the November 30 poll.
