UNHERALDED Arellano University open spiker Jovielyn Prado is making a name for herself in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Open Conference.
The Camarines Sur native, who currently plays for Laoag, has been a consistent standout for the Power Smashers, averaging 9.2 points per game in a performance that didn't escape the eye of coach Nes Pamilar.
“Si Jovie, lagi naman ‘yan (maasahan),” said Pamilar.
The 19-year old volleybelle, along with her Arellano teammate Jan Galang, had to miss two of their early games due to the Intercollegiate in Baguio, and Laoag struggled during their absence. The Power Smashers barely survived a tough challenge from also-ran Iriga, 25-10, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15, and lost to Pocari Sweat, 21-25, 16-25, 17-25.
But Laoag managed to turn things around as soon as Prado returned to the lineup, defeating erstwhile-unbeaten Air Force, 25-14, 25-23, 25-23. She even scored a game-high 23 points for Laoag as the Power Smashers beat University of the Philippines, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 26-24, to advance to the semis.
Prado, however, doesn't put too much weight on the impact of her return to Laoag's success; instead she's just satisfied knowing she gets to perform well against top-level competition.
“Syempre po masaya kasi kahit naman ganoon ‘yun nakaka-overwhelm as a player na ganoon ang (tiwala sa'yo ng) coach mo,” she said.
“Overwhelmed ako kasi nakakalaban ko mga dating beterano na, mga naglalaro na kung saan saan tapos UAAP players. Syempe pag sinabing UAAP players, sobrang lakas kaya yun po masayang-masaya,” added Prado.
