DARWIN, Australia – John Ignatius Macas beat Ivan Pavich of New Zealand via referee stopped contest Saturday to win the gold in the men’s flyweight division of the 2019 Arafura Games boxing competitions at the Darwin Convention Centre.

The 19-year-old Cagayan De Oro native unleashed a barrage of punches in the second round, forcing the referee to end the contest.

The Philippines has now collected 31 gold medals with basketball and badminton gold medal matches still to be held.

Boxing added a bronze medal when Jhon Christian Noces reached the semifinals of the welterweight division, where he lost to Tom Hanns of New Zealand.

The men’s beach volleyball team of Johnrel Amora and Hachaliah Galbuena defeated Australia 7, 21-10, 21-12, Saturday to also claim a bronze medal.

Amora and Gilbuena lost in the semifinals against Samoa, 23-25, 21-15, 15-11, but salvaged a bronze later in the day.
