Jessel Lumapas bags second gold in Asean School Games

JESSEL Lumapas copped her second gold medal as the Philippines tallied its fifth mint in the 10th Asean School Games in Malaysia.

A day after ruling the 400-meter run, Lumapas took the 200m gold in the girls division with a time of 25.03 seconds in a tight finish over compatriot Decerie Jane Niala (25.07).

The Dasmarinas City native was the Most Outstanding Athlete in the 2018 Palarong Pambansa after winning four gold medals in Ilocos Sur.

The 17-year-old Lumapas can win her third gold on Tuesday when she competes in the 4x400m run.

“Tingnan ko lang po. Kakayanin namin ng teammates ko. May tiwala naman ako sa kanila,” said Lumapas, who is now enrolled at Nazareth School of National University.

Tara Borlain and Bernalyn Bejoy, meanwhile, captured silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the girls’ 800m run.

Justin Ace De Leon finished with a silver medal in the boys’ artistic gymnastics, while Althea Descutido captured the bronze in the clubs event in rhythmic gymnastics.

The Philippines is in sixth place in the medal tally with five gold, five silver, and 10 bronze medals. Host Malaysia is in first place with a 23-24-19 haul.
