JANN Mari Nayre and Eliza Coyum produced gold medals for the Philippines on Tuesday in the 10th Asean School Games in Malaysia.
Nayre became the country’s first gold medalist in the meet in table tennis, beating Josh Chua Shao Han of Indonesia, 11-13, 13-11, 11-9, 11-9, in the final at the SJK Kong Hoe Hall.
Coyum clocked 14.45 seconds to beat Liza Putri Ramandha of Indonesia for the gold in the 100m hurdles.
Nayre, set to become the first Filipino table tennis player to play in the Youth Olympic Games later this year, swept the preliminiaries in the Asean School Games, beating Nguyen Duc Hieu of Vietnam, 11-6, 11-3, 11-8; Wattanachai Samranvong of Thailand, 11-4, 11-7, 11-9; and Chin Wei Jie of Malaysia, 11-5, 11-5, 11-6.
Nayre overcame Dominic Koh Song Jun of Singapore, 11-13, 11-9, 11-7, 11-8, in the quarterfinals, and won over Choong Javen of Malaysia, 11-5, 12-10, 11-3, in the semifinals.
The Philippines on Tuesday was running sixth in the medal tally with seven golds, six silvers, and 14 bronzes.
