HYROX World has threatened permanent bans on people who targeted Joanna Wietrzyk with threats or calls for violence following the Elite 15 athlete’s defecation incident during a race in China.
Roughly 48 hours after the incident went viral and drew flak online, HYROX stepped in to defend Wietrzyk after the Australian athlete and the organization faced intense online backlash at the HYROX China event.

In an official statement released Monday, HYROX World condemned threats and calls to harm the athlete, saying such behavior has no place in its community.
“Frustration should never be directed towards the athletes themselves,” HYROX World said.
The organization warned that anyone identified as threatening or encouraging harm against an athlete — including through comments, direct messages or social media — “will be permanently banned from all HYROX events.”
“We are currently reviewing and identifying those responsible, and action will be taken,” it added.
Wietrzyk became the subject of widespread criticism following the incident during competition in China last September 10 to 13, 2026. Wietrzyk continued racing after defecating on the course and ultimately won the Pro Women’s race as No. 1.
Most of the hate comments questioned why an athlete was allowed to continue despite her legs covered with feces.
HYROX World acknowledged that the incident had prompted legitimate concerns within its community, particularly around how its protocols were applied.
The organization said it has “clear biocontaminant and medical procedures in place,” but admitted that an unforeseen situation in China resulted in protocols designed for both elite competition and mass participation “becoming blurred.”
According to HYROX World, this created ambiguity over how the procedures should have been applied and understood.
The organization said it would examine what happened and take responsibility for improving its processes.
However, the statement did not directly explain why Wietrzyk was allowed to continue racing after the incident, nor did it address the concerns surrounding the potential sanitation and health implications for the other participants who subsequently used the course and equipment.
That omission left a significant part of the controversy unanswered.
HYROX China said affected areas and lanes were closed and isolated before comprehensive disinfection was carried out. Affected equipment was also removed, while the venue was set for further deep cleaning and carpet replacement after the event.
HYROX World's statement, however, focused primarily on the treatment of Wietrzyk following the incident rather than detailing the decision-making that allowed the race to continue.
The organization emphasized that its athletes are asked to push themselves to the highest levels, praising the “courage, resilience and refusal to give in” that makes elite athletes extraordinary.
HYROX World also said the concerns raised by its community are legitimate and promises to “hear them, examine what happened and take responsibility."
