THE Metro Manila Sports Fest will be welcoming a new member to the family when it opens its Season 2 this weekend.
Women’s volleyball has been added to basketball as part of the sports events to be played this year in the tournament backed by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in cooperation with the Metro Manila Council.
The 16-and-under girls’ volleyball and 24-and-under women’s volleyball will usher in the new season of the meet on Sunday at the San Juan gym, followed by the staging of the 16-and-under boys’ basketball where Marikina is the defending champion.
A total of 16 teams will be seeing action in the basketball event which is backed by the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), with 10 teams entered in the girls volleyball and nine in women’s’ volleyball.
The meet was officially launched last Tuesday with MMDA OIC General Manager Jose Arturo Garcia Jr. in attendance and joined by commissioner and Globalport coach Pido Jarencio, and tournament director Bonnie Tan.
“During the meeting with the different LGUs (Local Government Units), they proposed to have a women’s volleyball, kaya ngayon meron na tayong volleyball,” said Tan.
Also being considered to be included as part of the MMSF calendar of sports in the future are beach volleyball, boxing, and 3x3 basketball to be held in coordination with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).
A heavy five-game bill is in store on opening day with San Juan battling Makati in the first girls’ volleyball game at 8 a.m., followed by the tussle between San Juan and Paranaque in women’s volleyball at 9:30 a.m.
A brief opening ceremony will be held at 12 noon, before MMDA battles San Juan to open the basketball tournament at 1:30 p.m.
The 3:00 p.m. second game pits Pateros against Pasay, before Caloocan meets Quezon City in the final match of the day at 4:30 p.m.
The five-week tournament has ‘Mobile App ng Bayan,’ Barangay 143, and Synergy 88 as main sponsors, with Spalding as the official ball. The meet is also an initiative of the MMDA in support of President Duterte’s anti-drug campaign through sports.
