A total of 42 sports events will make up this year’s edition of the Philippine National Games slated from May 24 to June 2 in various venues in Metro Manila.
Commissioner Jolly Gomez of the Philippine Sports Commission announced on Wednesday the number of sports has already been finalized and registration will soon be opened.
Among the sports events included are archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, billiards, bowling, boxing, canoe kayak, chess, cycling, dancesport, dragon boat, fencing, football, futsal, golf, gymnastics, judo, karatedo, tennis, motocross, muay thai, and pencak silat.
Also part of the PNG this year are powerlifting, rugby, sailing, sepak takraw, shooting, soft tennis, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, windsurfing, wrestling, and wushu.
Gomez expects athletes who will emerge winners in the week-long multi-sports event to become part of the national team soon.
“It might not be seen in Myanmar (Southeast Asian Games) but in Singapore, we might see them from the NSAs that will embrace the grassroots development program,” said Gomez.
Gomez, however, stressed athletes discovered in the PNG won't be guaranteed spot in the national team if they win in their respective events.
“PSC don’t have a mandate on that, but the weight of winning the PNG should be greatly considered by the NSAs and the POC (Philippine Olympic Committee),” said the commissioner.
