DARWIN, Australia – Filipino athletes competing in the Arafura Games were honored in a banquet hosted by the Filipino community here on Sunday.
The Filipino Australian Association of the Northern Territory (FAANT) prepared a sumptuous dinner for the Philippine delegation competing in the 2019 Arafura Games, showing their appreciation to the 91 Filipino athletes competing for flag and country.
Filipino foods such as lechon, fried chicken and pancit were served for the athletes.
The Filipino community here also performed folk dances, while the athletes also showed their dancing skills during a simple presentation.
“The reception given by the Filipino community to the athletes from PSC, the spirit was so electric, so ecstatic that to me, it’s one testimony of solidarity and the spirit of Bayanihan was very much alive. I’m very proud of how everyone joined together of one common cause,” said John Rivas, Philippine consulate general to Northern Territory.
Members of the Filipino community also provided Filipino athletes with additional food and supplies such as bread, eggs, fruits and laundry detergent to augment to the support from the Philippine Sports Commission.
“The friendship, the kinship, and all the kind of camaraderie were seen throughout the evening,” Rivas said.
