ELIKA Salmorin of Negros Occidental took the first gold medal of the 2019 Batang Pinoy Visayas leg on Monday at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

The 14-year-old ruled the girls’ 2,000-meter walk with a time of 14 minutes, 16.08 seconds, beating Rhyza Vaflor of Escalante, Negros Occidental.

The Grade 9 student from Romanito Maravilla Sr. National High School dedicated the win to her 25-year-old brother Eduardo, who is an epileptic.

“This is for him (Eduardo). Whatever amount I get from here, I will spend it for his medicines,” said Salmorin in Filipino.

Other winners in athletics include Gio Baguna (boys’ discus throw) and Donalita Torres (girls’ high jump) of Cebu Province, Kate Julienne Martinez of Bago City (girls’ shotput) and Din Wel Barrosa of New Washington, Aklan (boys’ long jump).

The province also got two more from the pool courtesy of Troy Castor (boys’ 12-under 100-meter freestyle) and Jay-R Punzalan (boys’ 13-15 50-meter backstroke).
